Sonography is a medical diagnostic procedure that uses sound waves to create a visual image. It’s used to see unborn babies as well as take a look at the structure of organs within the body. Sonography technicians earn more than most and can bring home between forty and eighty thousand dollars annually depending on location and experience. It takes two years to earn the Associate’s Degree needed to become a certified sonography technician, and there are numerous sonography schools to choose from. There’s a big push towards online learning today, as well, and while you can’t earn all of your degree over the internet you can complete a portion of your education through the internet.
Online Basics
Sonography schools feature two basic aspects of education. First, you’ll have to complete didactic courses that give you the foundation on which to build your skills. These are the courses that are normally taught online. In addition to general education courses like anatomy, ethics, and medical terminology, some of the other sonography related courses that may be available online include:
- Sonography Scanning/Instrumentation – This course covers the various types and modes of sonography including the principals behind them and their applications. You’ll learn how to get the best scans possible from your tools.
- Cardiovascular Sonography – This course covers the basics of using sonography in a cardiovascular setting. The function and anatomy of the heart is covered thoroughly as are the various tools and techniques used to gather images of it.
- Physics of Sonography – This class focuses on explaining sonography in technical terms. Sound waves, their echoes, how they interact with different tissues and different densities and how they are transformed into visual images are all covered.
- Obstetric/gynecological Sonography – This course covers the basics and specifics of scanning the female reproductive system and the anatomy of the system itself.
These courses and others may be available online and will give you the knowledge needed to move to the next stage of your education. You’ll have to complete hands-on clinical training next and work with patients and ultrasound machines to ensure that you are skilled at the tasks. Once that you’ve completed all of your education and earned your degree the final step is to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by taking a certification exam. Once you complete it you’ll be ready to find employment. Online education can make it easier to earn your degree and enter this exciting, rewarding, and challenging field of medicine.
