How to Enter the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Field – A Guide

The medical industry is a can’t miss one when it comes to career choices. There are few industries that can offer you so much in terms of personal rewards and professional ones. If you know that you want to enter the medical industry but aren’t sure of the best way to go about it, diagnostic medical sonography could be one option worth looking into. Taking the steps needed to enter the field of diagnostic medical sonography is easier than you might think and can lead you to one of the most rewarding careers available today. Here’s what you need to do in order to become a sonography technician.

1. Graduate High School – In order to enroll in sonography schools you must hold a high school diploma or a GED. Earning either one is the first step you’ll need to take towards becoming a diagnostic medical sonography technician. If you’re still in high school, consider focusing some of your electives towards health related topics.

2. Choose the Right School – Choosing the best sonography school is important and shouldn’t be overlooked. Not all schools are created equally and you need to ensure that you take the time to make the right decision. Look for fully accredited schools that are located nearby you and if possible find one that offers some of the basic classes online to make it easier to complete your education.

3. Specialize if you Want – If you want to specialize in a certain area of sonography then be sure to do so. Specializing will require extra time in school but could lead to better jobs and higher salaries. You can specialize in a number of different areas including abdominal, obstetrics, neural, breast, and vascular sonography.

4. Get Certification – Once you’ve earned your degree the next step is to get certified. While states don’t technically require that you become certified in diagnostic medical sonography doing so will drastically increase your chances of employment since employers prefer to hire those who are certified through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

5. Keep Learning – And you shouldn’t stop your education once that you find employment, either. Take the time to enroll in continuing education courses whenever you can so that you can stay current on the latest developments in your field.

It will take about two years to complete a basic course to enter the diagnostic medical sonography field, and the education will be challenging but worth every second that you spend focusing on it.
