How to Become a Sonography Technician – The Steps to Take

For many, becoming a sonography technician just makes sense.  It is easy to understand why when you consider that it can pay between forty and eighty thousand dollars annually and involves a fairly quick education.  Add in the fact that you will be able to help others on a regular basis and it’s easy to see why sonography is a great career path that thousands have pursued.  If you’re giving consideration to becoming a sonography technician you’ll have a few basic steps to take.  Here’s what you’ll want to do in order to do so.

  1. Finish High School – In order to enroll in sonography schools you’ll have to have a high school degree or at the very least a GED.  If possible try to focus your high school elective courses on medically related classes so that you can start to build a foundation of knowledge as early as possible.

Choose a College – There are numerous sonography schools that will help you become a sonography technician and you’ll need to find the right one for you.  Look into things like online class options, accreditation, where you’ll be able to complete your clinical duties, and much more when choosing the right one.
  4. Decide on Specialization – If you specialize in a certain type of sonography you will be in school a bit longer but could earn more money.  The earlier you decide on specialization, the better.
  5. Enroll and Complete College – While it only takes two years to earn your degree the education needed to become a sonography technician can still be intensive and challenging.  Perseverance, dedication, and discipline are important if you want to succeed.  Once you enroll, stick with it until you graduate.
  6. Get Certified – While it may not be technically required, taking the certification exam from the ARDMS will allow you to become a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer and will greatly increase your chances of finding work.  It’s relatively easy for anyone who has completed courses to become a sonography technician and well worth the investment.
  7. Keep Learning – Once you’ve found employment it’s important that you keep working in order to ensure that you have the most success in your field.  New developments are constantly appearing and continuing education courses will ensure you’re always aware of them.
