If you decide that you want to specialize in a certain area of diagnostic medical sonography then you’ll have to spend extra time in school but will reap larger rewards. Normally this will add about a year to the length of time you’ll spend in sonography schools. You’ll learn the specifics of the type of sonography you want to focus on including anatomy and techniques that you can apply to getting higher quality scans. There are numerous areas to focus on including:
- Abdominal – Abdominal sonography technicians specialize in scanning the abdominal cavity and the organs within it. The male reproductive system, spleen, liver, kidneys, bile duct, gall bladder and many other organs fall under this specialization.
- Obstetrics – This is the type of sonography that most are familiar with and it involves scanning the female reproductive system to find any problems and to watch the development of the fetus during pregnancy.
- Breast – Checking the blood flow into the breasts, monitoring cancer, and much more are all issues that are dealt with through breast sonography.
- Vascular – This area of diagnostic medical sonography focuses on blood flow within the body and often uses Doppler mode sonography to show it.
- Cardiac – The heart is one organ that truly shows through on a sonogram and those who specialize in this area of diagnostic medical sonography focus on capturing images that show the structure and function of the heart.
- Neural – Higher frequency sound waves are utilized in this field of sonography which focuses on the brain and spinal column.
