A Closer Look at Sonography Schools – An Overview

Medicine is one of the most rewarding fields you can enter.  The financial rewards of taking a job with a higher than average salary are obvious, but the personal satisfaction that comes with knowing that you helped with medical issues is unrivaled.  Sonography is just one field in medicine, but one you may want to consider.  Becoming a sonography technician is well worth the investment of time and energy.  Sonography schools are located across the country, letting anyone who wants to enter this field do so.  There are a few things to keep in mind concerning sonography schools, including what to look for in one and what to expect during your education.

What to Look For

First of all, there are a few things to consider when you start to look through the various sonography schools available to you.

  • Accreditation – You need to enroll in a school that has accreditation from a respected organization, otherwise you may be unable to find a job or may have to spend one to two years completing an internship, even with a degree.
  • Location – Try to find a school that is nearby you.  Even if some courses are available online, you’ll still have some on-campus training.
  • Online Options – While you will certainly do some hands on training, finding a program that offers even one or two basic courses online can make your education even easier to complete since you can learn on your schedule.
  • Financial Aid – Utilizing financial aid is important, and finding sonography schools that accept it is vital.

What to Expect

Once you’ve selected a sonography school and enrolled, your education will begin.  While course specifics vary from school to school, there are a few things that you can expect no matter where you’re earning your degree.

  • Program Length – Most sonography schools offer two year long Associate’s Degree programs, which is the minimum required to work in the field.  If you decide to specialize in a certain area of sonography your education could take longer.
  • Classes – Initially your courses will focus on general medical related topics like anatomy, ethics, and medical terminology.  Thereafter you’ll spend most of your time learning how to operate ultrasound equipment and the specifics of each type of sonography.
  • Certification – Once that you’ve graduated from a sonography school you’ll have to take and pass a certification exam.  This certification is required in order to enter the field and will qualify you as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or ARDMS.
