Understanding the Ultrasound Technology Field

Do you dream of becoming an ultrasound technician, or a sonographer? To be one, you need to perfect a certified course of study for ultrasound technology and undergo proper development and have relevant working experience in this challenging medical field. To give you an overview of this field, this article will briefly explain to you what ultrasound technology really is and what you will be doing, or rather your job description as a sonographer.

Ultrasound is a repeated sound pressure with an occurrence larger than the top periphery of human hearing. The use of ultrasound is applied in diverse subject areas, basically to infiltrate a medium and study the reflection signature or better still supply concentrated energy. The main aim of the reflective signature is to expose details about the interior structure of the medium. The commonest application of the ultrasound technology is its use in the medical field of sonography to scan and display images of fetuses in the womb. As mentioned, there are a number of other applications as well.

The field of ultrasonography has grown very rapidly owing to improvements and advancement in diagnostic scientific discipline where sound waves are applicable. Today, there are a number of specializations that an ultrasound technician can undertake. Ultrasonographers could opt to specialize in abdominal sonography (pancreas, kidney, spleen, and liver), echocardiography (heart), ophthalmic sonography (eye), neurosonography (brain) and obstetric and gynecologic sonography (the female reproductive health).

Ultrasonography is a better alternative as it has reduced risks especially when compared with X-rays. Basically, an ultrasound technician uses specific tools to divert high-frequency sound waves into the specific part of the human body and as a result an image of the body part is displayed on a screen thanks to the mirrored echoes. The images can then be videotaped or photographed and taken to a physician for evaluation and proper diagnosis.

The role of an ultrasound technician includes: – operating the ultrasound equipment, maintenance and tuning up of the same, noting any existing and relevant medical history of a patient, explaining and elaborating the ultrasound process to the patient, advising the patient on the correct position that will take optimum images, maintaining the records of a patient, determining the best images to be forwarded to the physician for evaluation and diagnosis among other roles.

A competent ultrasound technician is one who has the ability to understand and manipulate all diagnostic tools and equipment used in sonography, have the physical ability to help, raise, and turn patients to make them relax and comfortable for the best ultrasound shots, have impeccable visual judgment to be able to properly select the right images for the doctor, be vigilant with details to be able to record a patient’s information accurately, and above all else have excellent communication skills, strong interaction skills and outstanding interpersonal skills.

Training in this field can be from a hospital, a vocational/technical institution, with the military, and from a college or university which extends related vocational or bachelor programs. All these institutions have the ability to give qualified guidance and training on the ultrasound field. With that said the demand for Sonographers is expected to increase very rapidly over the next 10 years. Further, this field has great income potential in the field.
