What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound has to do with the passage of sound waves through the body to find out what may be its contents. The technique behind this is that as the sound waves is passed into the body, echoes are sent back. The echoes sent back depends on the structure or massiveness of the object in the body.
Ultrasound began first with Lazzaro Spallanzani in 1790 when he discovered that bats were able to fly by using the balance obtained through their ears. Today’s ultrasound techniques are from the development of Douglas Howry and Holmes who developed the B-mode scanner. The B-mode scanner was invented in the 1950′s by Professor Ian Donald which was used to discover a twin pregnancy.
Education Requirements.
To become an ultrasound technician, one would need to have a solid foundation in mathematics and science. Technicians emerge after spending two years or four years in the universities. The two-year study comes with an honor of Associate’s Degree while the four year study is for a Bachelor Degree. Apart from the universities, acquiring education in ultrasound is also possible in technical schools and some designated hospitals. Although a license in their preferred location will give a boost to those who seek employment, it is not a pre-requisite to work or practice in the state.
Where they can work.
Ultrasound technology is growing. This calls for more hands in the field to meet the global request. Most ultrasound technicians are required to work in hospitals or where medicine is done to perform diagnoses that are not ordinary. They use sound rays in working which is more advantageous than the other kinds such as x-rays that makes use of radiation. It is known that radiation also has its own side effects. Ultrasound technicians are also called ultrasonographers. Apart from using the ultrasound machines, they also build files that contain the patients’ medical records and report them to the physicians.
Training.
Ultrasound technicians are worthy to practice only when they can do the following:
1) Must know exactly what to do on seeing the patient and hearing his complaints. He will not have to do any guess work.
2) Must be strong enough to help patients to get the right positions while laying down.
3) Must understand the mages well. Preferably, they must not have eye defects.
4) Must be able to make patients calm by the way they talk and explain the results to them.
Job opportunities for ultrasound technicians are growing because patients prefer using sound waves instead of radiation which also poses a threat on their lives.
Applications of Ultrasound technology.
Ultrasound technology is used mostly in the hospitals, clinics or private health institutions to detect pregnancies as early as five weeks old. It is also used to determine the progressive stages of the pregnancy as well as the sex of the baby in the womb.
Salaries.
On the average, ultrasound technicians earn between $50,000 and $60,000 per year. In 20he BLS reported that earnings were as high as $52,490. Most top workers earn more than $60,000 a year since they work with contracts in several places. With the increasing need of ultrasound technicians in the field of medicine, there is no doubt that the salaries will also increase.
